LIKELY QUESTIONS

- Tell us about a time you tested mechanical equipment, identified a fault, and recommended or implemented corrective action.
- What process do you use when inspecting mechanical works to ensure safety, quality, and compliance with specifications?
- Describe your experience designing or modifying plant components. What tools, calculations, or practical considerations do you apply?
- How do you prepare an inventory of mechanical inspection works and services, and how do you prioritize urgent maintenance needs?
- What key information do you include in a mechanical inspection progress report for management decision-making?
- How have you used computer applications in maintenance planning, inspection reporting, inventory tracking, or equipment record management?
- This role requires judgment and integrity in a public sector setting. How do you ensure objective inspection findings, especially when under pressure from operators, contractors, or supervisors?

BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS
- Describe a time when you prevented a major breakdown through routine inspection.
Model approach: Situation - A critical pump/vehicle/plant unit showed early warning signs during inspection. Task - Confirm the issue and prevent service interruption. Action - Performed checks, reviewed service history, tested the unit, identified wear/misalignment/leakage, recommended immediate repair and scheduled maintenance, documented findings. Result - Breakdown avoided, downtime reduced, repair costs minimized, service continuity maintained.

- Tell us about a time you had to recommend costly repairs and convince others they were necessary.
Model approach: Situation - Management/operators were hesitant to approve repairs due to budget or operational pressures. Task - Present a justified technical recommendation. Action - Collected inspection evidence, explained safety/reliability risks, compared repair-versus-failure costs, proposed phased action where possible, documented urgency clearly. Result - Approval obtained, repairs completed, risk reduced, and trust in your technical judgment strengthened.

- Give an example of when you had to manage multiple inspection or maintenance priorities at the same time.
Model approach: Situation - Several machines/vehicles/plants required inspection within tight timelines. Task - Prioritize work without compromising quality. Action - Ranked tasks by safety, operational impact, and urgency; coordinated with users/maintenance teams; used schedules and tracking tools; updated stakeholders through progress reports. Result - Critical assets handled first, deadlines met, no major incidents, and work remained organized and traceable.

- Describe a situation where your inspection identified non-compliance or poor workmanship by a contractor or technician.
Model approach: Situation - During inspection, installed/repaired mechanical work did not meet standards/specifications. Task - Ensure compliance while maintaining professionalism. Action - Verified against drawings/specs, documented defects, communicated findings factually, requested corrective action, followed up with re-inspection before acceptance. Result - Defects corrected, quality improved, public resources protected, and standards enforced consistently.

SMART QUESTIONS TO ASK
- What types of machinery, vehicles, and plant equipment will this role inspect most frequently, and what are the current maintenance priorities?
- How is success measured for the Inspector I Mechanical role in the first 6 to 12 months?
- What inspection, reporting, and maintenance management systems or software does CWWDA currently use?
- How does the mechanical inspection team coordinate with operations, procurement, and external contractors when repairs or component modifications are required?
- Are there any ongoing or upcoming water infrastructure projects where this role will play a key inspection or plant reliability support function?

RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR
- Vague answers about tools, systems, reporting lines, or inspection standards, which may indicate unclear processes or weak maintenance controls.
- Signs that inspection findings are often ignored or delayed due to bureaucracy, politics, or budget issues, creating risk and limiting the role's effectiveness.
- Unrealistic workload expectations, such as one officer covering too many sites/assets without adequate transport, equipment, staffing, or safety support.
