LIKELY QUESTIONS - Walk us through your experience in physicochemical laboratory analysis and how it prepares you for a Senior Laboratory Analyst role. - Which physicochemical tests and analytical techniques have you performed routinely, and how do you ensure their results are accurate and reliable? - Describe your experience drafting, reviewing, and implementing laboratory SOPs. - How do you prepare reagents, standards, samples, and test solutions while maintaining traceability and preventing errors? - Tell us about your experience with proficiency testing and inter-laboratory comparison exercises. How did you investigate an unsatisfactory result? - What laboratory quality systems have you worked under, such as GLP, GMP, ISO/IEC 17025, or similar standards? - How have you managed laboratory chemicals, consumables, stock records, and expiry-date control? - What would you do if you identified an out-of-specification result, an instrument malfunction, or a deviation from an approved test method? BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS - Tell us about a time you identified an error or risk in a laboratory process before it affected reported results. Model approach: Situation: A reagent preparation or sample-handling issue created a potential risk to results. Task: Protect data integrity and prevent release of unreliable results. Action: Stopped or quarantined affected work, informed the supervisor, checked records and traceability, performed root-cause analysis, repeated affected preparation or testing where justified, and proposed an SOP or checklist improvement. Result: Prevented incorrect reporting, strengthened the process, and documented CAPA actions. - Describe a time you had to manage competing laboratory priorities under tight turnaround times. Model approach: Situation: Multiple routine samples, urgent testing requests, and scheduled quality activities were due at the same time. Task: Deliver timely results without compromising approved procedures or quality controls. Action: Prioritised by risk, due date, sample stability, and regulatory importance; communicated workload constraints; prepared materials in advance; coordinated equipment use; and reviewed records before release. Result: Met critical timelines, maintained compliant documentation, and avoided rushed or incomplete testing. - Give an example of when you improved an SOP, worksheet, or laboratory documentation process. Model approach: Situation: An existing procedure or record format was unclear, inefficient, or led to recurring documentation errors. Task: Improve usability while keeping the process compliant with laboratory requirements. Action: Collected evidence from deviations or user feedback, reviewed applicable standards and methods, drafted revisions, sought technical review and approval, trained users, and monitored implementation. Result: Reduced errors, improved consistency, and created a clearer audit trail. - Tell us about a time you handled a safety incident, chemical spill, or unsafe laboratory practice. Model approach: Situation: A spill, near miss, improper chemical storage issue, or unsafe practice was observed. Task: Protect staff, the environment, and laboratory operations. Action: Applied the relevant EHS procedure, used appropriate PPE, isolated the area if necessary, informed responsible personnel, documented the incident, supported investigation, and implemented preventive actions such as refresher training or improved labelling. Result: Incident was controlled safely, no harm occurred or impact was minimised, and recurrence risk was reduced. SMART QUESTIONS TO ASK - What are the main physicochemical test areas, product categories, and analytical techniques this role will support during the first year? - Which quality standard or accreditation framework does the laboratory operate under, and what are the current priorities for maintaining or expanding compliance? - How are proficiency testing results, out-of-specification investigations, and corrective and preventive actions managed within the laboratory? - What are the most important operational challenges currently facing the physicochemical analysis section, such as equipment capacity, turnaround time, or inventory availability? - What would success look like for the successful candidate in the first six months and by the end of the two-year contract? RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR - Unclear answers about quality systems, method validation or verification, result review, deviation handling, and how the laboratory protects data integrity. - Frequent references to reagent shortages, poorly maintained instruments, delayed calibration, or pressure to release results without adequate controls. - Vague expectations about working hours, workload distribution, contract renewal, training, or who is accountable for safety, SOP approval, and final report authorisation.
