How do you ensure the process is timely, objective and useful for development? - NuPEA operates in a regulated environment. How would you support ISO compliance and demonstrate that HR processes are controlled, documented and continually improved? BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS - Tell us about a time you identified and resolved a payroll or benefits administration error. Model approach: Situation: Briefly describe the payroll/benefits issue, its potential financial or employee-relations impact and the affected group. Task: Explain your responsibility for investigating, correcting and preventing recurrence. Action: Describe how you reconciled source data, engaged finance/payroll providers, corrected records and payments, communicated appropriately with affected staff, and introduced validation controls. Result: Quantify the error corrected, timelines met, employee impact avoided and control improvement achieved. - Give an example of a difficult employee grievance or conflict you managed. Model approach: Situation: Describe the nature of the grievance without disclosing confidential details. Task: State your role in ensuring a fair, timely and policy-compliant resolution. Action: Explain how you listened to all parties, reviewed evidence and policy, maintained confidentiality, documented each step, facilitated resolution or referred the matter to the appropriate disciplinary process. Model approach: Situation: Identify an inefficient process, such as recruitment tracking, onboarding, leave administration, employee files or appraisal completion. Model approach: Situation: Explain the concurrent priorities, such as payroll closure, recruitment, management reporting and an employee-relations case. Task: State the deadline and required quality standard. Action: Describe how you prioritized by risk and urgency, created a work plan, delegated where appropriate, communicated dependencies and performed quality checks. Result: Highlight on-time delivery, accuracy, stakeholder confidence and any sustained improvement to planning. SMART QUESTIONS TO ASK - What are the most urgent HR priorities NuPEA expects the successful candidate to address during the first six to twelve months? - How are HR responsibilities currently divided between the HR function, finance, line managers and any outsourced service providers, particularly for payroll and benefits administration? - What HRIS and payroll systems does NuPEA use, and what are the main data quality, reporting or process challenges with those systems today? - How mature are NuPEA's performance management and staff development processes, and what improvements would leadership like to see? - What ISO or other audit findings, compliance priorities or HR process risks will this role be expected to help address? RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR - Unclear accountability for payroll, statutory remittances, disciplinary decisions or employee data management, especially where HR, finance and external providers may each assume another party is responsible. - A culture that treats HR primarily as administration, while expecting the role to resolve complex employee-relations, compliance and workforce issues without leadership support or authority. - Vague answers about policies, HRIS controls, audit findings, employee turnover, grievance trends or performance-management completion, which may indicate weak HR governance or unresolved compliance risks.
