LIKELY QUESTIONS

- How have you applied WHO good practices for Pharmaceutical Quality Control Laboratories and ISO 17025 requirements in a biologics QC environment?
- Describe your experience with testing biologics or biopharmaceutical products. Which analytical techniques, materials, and critical quality attributes have you worked with?
- How would you develop or review an SOP for sample receipt, labeling, storage, chain of custody, testing, and retention?
- Walk us through how you would qualify a new analytical instrument before it is commissioned for routine QC use.
- Tell us about a complex instrument failure you investigated. How did you identify the root cause, restore operations, and document the event?
- How would you investigate an environmental monitoring excursion or contamination-related issue in a biologics laboratory?
- What controls would you implement to ensure data integrity, traceability, and security when using paper records and a laboratory information management system?
- How would you balance technical laboratory priorities with departmental planning, procurement, budgeting, staff performance, and turnaround-time targets?

BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS

- Tell us about a time you identified a quality-system gap and led an improvement.
Model approach: Situation: A QC process had inconsistent documentation or a recurring deviation. Task: Ensure compliance and prevent recurrence. Action: Performed a gap assessment against SOPs and ISO 17025 or WHO requirements, involved affected staff, revised the procedure, trained users, and introduced effectiveness checks. Result: State measurable improvement, such as fewer deviations, improved audit outcome, reduced turnaround time, or stronger traceability.

- Describe a time you handled an out-of-specification, out-of-trend, or unexpected laboratory result.
Model approach: Situation: A test result was outside acceptance criteria or inconsistent with historical data. Task: Protect product quality while completing a scientifically sound investigation. Action: Secured raw data and samples, checked calculation and transcription errors, reviewed instrument status, reagents, standards, environmental conditions, analyst technique, and SOP compliance; documented root cause and CAPA. Result: Explain the confirmed outcome, impact assessment, CAPA effectiveness, and how recurrence was prevented.

- Give an example of when you had to troubleshoot critical analytical equipment under operational pressure.
Model approach: Situation: An instrument needed for priority testing failed or showed abnormal performance. Task: Restore reliable operation without compromising data quality or safety. Action: Reviewed error logs and qualification status, performed approved troubleshooting, engaged maintenance support where needed, documented the intervention, assessed affected data, and arranged contingency testing. Result: Quantify reduced downtime, avoided delayed reporting, or improved preventive-maintenance controls.

- Tell us about a time you had to work across teams to deliver a laboratory objective.
Model approach: Situation: A project required coordination among QC analysts, QA, engineering, procurement, or external suppliers. Task: Deliver a plan such as equipment commissioning, audit readiness, method transfer, or stock recovery. Action: Defined responsibilities, milestones, risks, communication cadence, and evidence requirements; escalated barriers early and tracked actions to closure. Result: State the delivered outcome, timeline, compliance result, and stakeholder benefit.

SMART QUESTIONS TO ASK

- What are the laboratory's highest-priority biologics and biopharmaceutical testing capabilities over the next two years?
- Which WHO good practices and ISO 17025 gaps are currently the most important for this role to address?
- What types of instruments, methods, and environmental control systems would the Principal Pharmaceutical Analyst oversee most directly?
- How are deviations, OOS results, CAPAs, and change controls currently managed, and where would you expect this person to strengthen the process?
- What would success look like in the first 90 days and by the end of the two-year contract?

RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR

- Unclear answers about the laboratory's accreditation status, quality-system ownership, audit findings, or available resources to close compliance gaps.
- Expectations to release, repeat, invalidate, or report results without a documented investigation, QA review, or adequate data-integrity controls.
- Persistent equipment downtime, unreliable utilities or environmental controls, inadequate reference materials, or procurement delays without a credible contingency plan.
