Job Description

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is hiring a Deputy Director, Legal Services/Corporation Secretary.

The role is based within the Legal Services Division and reports to the Director General. It combines senior legal leadership with corporate-secretarial responsibilities. The position suits an experienced Kenyan legal professional with substantial public-sector or comparable experience.

Strong board governance, legal advisory, compliance and litigation experience are particularly relevant.

About the Role

This is a senior position responsible for coordinating legal services and supporting the Bureau's governance functions. The successful candidate will advise on legal matters affecting KNBS and oversee important legal documentation, contracts and agreements.

The role also carries significant Board-related responsibilities. These include coordinating Board papers, recording resolutions, safeguarding Board records and supporting Board evaluation and development activities. The position therefore requires both legal judgment and strong organizational capability.

Key Responsibilities

The role focuses on several connected areas:

  • Coordinate preparation and circulation of Board papers.
  • Record Board meeting minutes and communicate Board resolutions.
  • Safeguard Board records, decisions and the Bureau's official seal.
  • Oversee legal opinions, contracts, agreements and memoranda.
  • Coordinate legal policy, standards and guideline development.
  • Monitor legal and compliance risks.
  • Advise on legal issues affecting KNBS policies and operations.
  • Support litigation, court proceedings and preparation of witnesses.
  • Coordinate Board meetings, evaluations and development activities.
  • Research legal matters connected to the Bureau's mandate.

Applicants without the specified legal qualifications, professional standing or senior-level experience may face a significant eligibility gap.
