LIKELY QUESTIONS

- Walk us through your laboratory experience and explain how it prepares you for a Senior Laboratory Analyst role supporting medical device quality control.
- Describe your experience drafting, reviewing, implementing, and training colleagues on laboratory SOPs.
- How do you ensure that sample preparation, reagent preparation, testing, calculations, and test reports are accurate, traceable, and compliant with approved procedures?
- Tell us about your experience with medical device testing, or, if your experience is in another regulated laboratory area, how you would transfer those skills to medical device quality control.
- How have you participated in proficiency testing (PT) or inter-laboratory comparison (ILC) programmes, and how did you investigate any unsatisfactory results?
- What laboratory safety, chemical handling, decontamination, sterilisation, and waste-management controls have you applied in previous roles?
- How do you manage laboratory inventory, including chemical stock levels, expiry dates, storage conditions, stock reconciliation, and disposal of obsolete materials?
- Describe a time when you identified a laboratory nonconformance, out-of-specification result, equipment issue, or documentation error. What actions did you take?

BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS

- Tell us about a time you improved a laboratory procedure or SOP.
Model approach: Situation: A routine procedure caused inconsistent execution, delays, or documentation gaps. Task: You were asked to improve the process while maintaining compliance. Action: Reviewed the existing SOP, consulted users and quality personnel, assessed risks, revised steps and acceptance criteria, introduced version control, trained staff, and monitored implementation. Result: Reduced errors or turnaround time, improved consistency, and created an auditable, approved procedure.

- Describe a time you handled an unexpected test result or deviation.
Model approach: Situation: A test result was unexpected, out of specification, or inconsistent with historical trends. Task: Ensure data integrity and determine the cause without prematurely invalidating results. Action: Secured raw data and samples, checked calculations, equipment status, reagent validity, analyst technique, environmental conditions, and SOP compliance; documented the deviation; involved the supervisor or quality team; and performed approved investigation steps. Result: Identified the root cause or confirmed the result, implemented CAPA, and prevented recurrence.

- Give an example of when you had to manage competing laboratory priorities.
Model approach: Situation: Multiple samples, reports, stock activities, and urgent testing deadlines occurred at the same time. Task: Deliver priority work on time without compromising quality or safety. Action: Assessed sample criticality and due dates, created a work plan, communicated capacity constraints, prepared materials in advance, delegated appropriate tasks, and maintained real-time documentation. Result: Met critical deadlines, maintained data quality, and ensured no safety or compliance steps were skipped.

- Tell us about a time you raised a safety concern in the laboratory.
Model approach: Situation: You observed an unsafe practice, inadequate PPE use, poor chemical storage, equipment risk, or ineffective decontamination process. Task: Protect staff, samples, and laboratory operations. Action: Stopped or controlled the immediate risk where appropriate, informed the responsible person and supervisor, documented the observation, supported risk assessment, and helped implement corrective actions such as retraining, labeling, segregation, or revised procedures. Result: Risk was controlled, staff awareness improved, and the laboratory strengthened its EHS compliance.

SMART QUESTIONS TO ASK

- What types of medical devices, materials, or test parameters will this role support most frequently, and which analytical methods are most critical in the first six months?
- What quality system and accreditation standards guide the laboratory's work, for example ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 13485, or national regulatory requirements?
- How is success measured for the Senior Laboratory Analyst during the two-year contract, particularly regarding testing throughput, SOP development, PT/ILC performance, and quality compliance?
- What are the laboratory's current priorities or challenges in inventory control, method implementation, equipment maintenance, or documentation quality?
- How are deviations, out-of-specification results, CAPA, and change controls managed, and what level of ownership would this role have in those processes?

RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR

- Unclear answers about the laboratory quality system, accreditation status, approved methods, document control, or how test results are reviewed and authorized.
- Expectations to meet turnaround targets while bypassing SOPs, calibration, safety controls, investigation procedures, or adequate staffing and consumable availability.
- Vague information about contract renewal, reporting lines, training, equipment condition, PPE availability, chemical waste disposal, or responsibility for professional registration and compliance.
