How Commercial Pilot Salary in the United States Compares with Other Aviation Markets (2026)
A commercial pilot salary in the United States can pass $465 an hour at the top of the scale. Top US captain pay runs 1.5 to 1.9 times senior captain pay in the UK, Germany, Singapore, Canada and Australia.

A commercial pilot salary in the United States can pass $465 an hour at the top of the scale. A first officer in Nairobi earns a fraction of that. The gap is real, but the headline number hides a lot.
I compared pilot pay across ten aviation markets. I used federal wage data, airline contracts, recruiter listings and current exchange rates. Where an airline does not publish its scales, I show a range and label it an estimate.
Pay is only one piece of the decision. Training cost, flight-hour rules, tax and work authorization decide what you keep. This guide puts them side by side, so you can plan your own route to the flight deck.
Key Takeaways
- The median US airline pilot salary is $232,140 a year. Commercial pilots outside the airlines earn a median of $123,220.
- Senior widebody captains at Delta, American and United earn $465.13 an hour. At a 75-hour monthly guarantee, that is about $419,000 a year.
- Top US captain pay runs 1.5 to 1.9 times senior captain pay in the UK, Germany, Singapore, Canada and Australia.
- Emirates pays tax-free. A first officer takes home AED 385,000 ($105,000) in cash, inside a package worth AED 900,000 ($245,000).
- Kenyan captains earn an estimated $72,000 to $122,000. Kenya Airways does not publish its pilot pay scales.
- US training costs $70,000 to $130,000. The FAA requires 1,500 flight hours, or 1,000 with a qualifying degree.
- Boeing forecasts demand for 674,000 new pilots through 2045, including 122,000 in North America.

How I Compared Pilot Salaries Across Markets
Sources and Method
Pilot pay is hard to compare. Unions negotiate most scales, and some airlines never publish them. So I ranked my sources by quality.
Government data and airline documents came first. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and a Qantas job listing sit in that group. Reporting on signed contracts came second, such as Air Canada’s 2024 agreement. Salary trackers came last, and I mark those as estimates.
I convert every figure to US dollars for comparison. Local currency stays in the tables. Hourly rates become annual pay at 900 paid hours a year. The BLS reports that airline pilots fly about 75 hours a month on average.
Exchange Rates Used
I used the European Central Bank reference rates for 26 October 2026. One euro bought $1.1188. The pound was worth $1.3347, the Canadian dollar $0.7129 and the Australian dollar $0.7025. The Singapore dollar was worth $0.7809 and the South African rand $0.0601.
Kenya’s rate comes from the Central Bank of Kenya: KSh 129.89 per dollar. Nigeria’s official rate was about ₦1,332 per dollar. The UAE dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 per dollar.
Commercial Pilot Salary in the United States
What the Federal Data Shows
The BLS counts airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers as one group. Their median annual wage was $232,140 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned under $106,710. The highest 10 percent earned over $463,830.
Commercial pilots form a separate group. They fly charters, tours, firefighting missions and crop work. Their median wage was $123,220, and the top 10 percent earned over $266,620.
Major Airline Pilot Pay at Delta, United and American
Contract rates drive airline pilot salary at the big three. A 12-year captain on an A350, 777 or 787 earns $465.13 an hour. The matching first officer earns $317.73.
At 900 paid hours, that is about $418,600 for the captain and $286,000 for the first officer. Those figures exclude overtime, profit sharing and per diem.
Narrowbody captains earn less. A Delta 737 captain makes $388.27 an hour, or about $349,400 a year. American, United and Southwest narrowbody captains move to roughly $400 an hour in 2027.
Delta’s pilot agreement took effect in March 2023. It delivered 34 percent raises over its life. The deal becomes amendable on December 31, 2026, and talks opened in April 2026.
New hires start far below the top. Under 2024 contracts, first-year pay was $91 an hour at United, $116.05 at American and $125.52 at Delta. That equals roughly $82,000 to $113,000 a year at 900 hours.
Regional Airline Pilot Pay
Regional carriers feed the majors. SkyWest lists $92.73 per flight hour for first-year first officers and $144.24 for first-year captains. At 900 hours, that is about $83,000 and $130,000.
Other trackers report higher first-year totals once bonuses count. AviationA2Z puts SkyWest first officers at $90,000 to $110,000 in year one. Sign-on bonuses and flow-through agreements to the majors shift the real numbers.
Cargo, Charter and Corporate Pilot Salary
Cargo flying pays at the top of the market. Airline pilots at courier and express carriers had a median wage of $334,930, against $293,240 in scheduled air transportation. Commercial pilots in nonscheduled air transportation, which includes charter flying, had a median of $133,150.
Benefits That Add to US Pilot Pay
Base rates are not the full package. Airline pilots receive a per diem for every hour away from home. They may earn extra pay for international flights. Pilots and their immediate families usually get free or reduced-fare flights.
Profit sharing adds more at some carriers. At Delta, the pay advantage over peers now comes from profit sharing, not base wages.
Pilot Salary by Country: Comparison Table
The table lists annual pilot pay in local currency and US dollars. Ranges run from entry level to the top of the scale where data allows. Rows marked est. rely on salary trackers, not airline documents.

How to Read the Numbers
The US range is the widest. It starts near $83,000 at a regional carrier and climbs past $418,000 in a widebody captain seat. No other market in the table spans that distance.
Entry pay sits closer together than top pay. A first-year SkyWest first officer earns about $83,000. A QantasLink first officer starts at A$79,252, or $55,700. A new Air Canada pilot earned $56,100 in 2024.
The ceiling is where the US pulls away. The top US captain earns about $419,000. Senior captains in the UK, Germany and Singapore top out near $267,000 to $280,000.
How US Pilot Pay Compares in Each Region
United Arab Emirates
Emirates splits pay into cash and benefits. A standard first officer package is worth AED 900,000 a year, according to Emirates pay data published by JobXDubai. Cash pay is AED 385,000, or about $105,000. Housing, school fees, medical cover and 42 days of leave make up the rest.
Captains see a total package of AED 1,185,000, or $323,000. Monthly take-home runs about AED 48,000. That is roughly $157,000 a year.
Entry is demanding. Emirates asks first officers for 2,000 hours on 20-tonne jets. The enhanced package targets pilots with over 4,000 hours. The UAE rewards experienced pilots, not new commercial licence holders.
Against the US, a regional first officer at $83,000 earns less cash than an Emirates first officer. A top US captain earns 2.7 times Emirates cash pay. Count the full Emirates package, and the gap shrinks to 1.3 times.
Canada
Air Canada’s 2024 agreement raised pay about 42 percent over four years. New pilots earned C$87.48 an hour in year one, or C$78,732 a year. That equals about $56,100. American first officers earned $116.05 an hour at the time.
A 12-year Air Canada 787 captain earns C$389.96 an hour. That is about C$351,000, or $250,200. An American 787 captain with the same seniority earned $447.24 an hour, over $400,000 a year.
Canada closes part of the gap through pensions. All Air Canada pilots join a pension plan. Newer pilots join a defined contribution plan, while senior pilots keep a defined benefit plan.
United Kingdom and Germany
UK pay depends on the airline. Trackers put British Airways first officers at £55,000 to £75,000 at entry and about £100,000 by year ten. Long-haul captains reach £135,000 to £200,000. BALPA scales are not public, so treat these figures as estimates.
Lufthansa’s tables stay private too, as Aviospace reports. Trackers estimate first officers at €73,000 in year one and €120,000 by year ten. Captains run €155,000 to €250,000.
A top US captain earns 1.6 times the UK long-haul ceiling and 1.5 times Lufthansa’s. If relocation is on your mind, our ranking of the best countries to work in for English speakers covers visas and quality of life.
Singapore and Australia
Singapore Airlines pays a basic salary plus productivity and overnight allowances. AviationA2Z estimated first officers at S$94,000 to S$195,000 in 2025. It put captains at S$235,000 to S$355,000. That places senior captains near $277,000.
Australia publishes more. A QantasLink direct-entry first officer role lists A$79,252 to A$94,383, plus superannuation and allowances. Qantas short-haul pilots also have 3 percent raises scheduled for September 2025, 2026 and 2027.
Estimates for mainline captains run from A$160,000 to A$320,000, according to PeakIFI. A top US captain earns about 1.9 times the upper figure.
Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa
African pilot pay is the hardest to verify. Most carriers publish no scales. I rely on trackers and one industry executive, so read these as ranges.
Kenya first. Kenya Airways does not publish a full 2026 pilot pay scale. AviationA2Z estimates first officers at KSh 478,000 to KSh 517,000 a month. That is KSh 5.7 million to KSh 6.2 million a year, or $44,000 to $48,000. Pilot Value lists captains at an average of $94,000, inside a $72,000 to $122,000 range.
A US regional first officer earns 1.7 to 1.9 times a Kenyan first officer. A top US captain earns about 3.4 times the highest Kenyan estimate. For other high earners in the market, see the highest-paying professions in Kenya.
Nigeria next. A Nigerian airline chief executive told Nairametrics that pilot pay runs from ₦800,000 to ₦9 million a month. He said no standard structure exists. At ₦1,332 per dollar, that is $7,200 to $81,100 a year.
The same executive said Nigeria’s commercial pilot training concentrates in two government-backed institutions, in Zaria and Ilorin. Many pilots train in South Africa, the United States or Europe instead. OAG data show Nigeria had the fastest airline capacity growth among Africa’s top ten markets in July 2026, with seats up 44.5 percent year on year.
South Africa last. Ourpower estimates pilot pay at R40,000 to R220,000 a month, built from pay scales, surveys and listings. That is R480,000 to R2.64 million a year, or $28,900 to $158,800. The wide span reflects entry-level and senior captain roles together.

What You Keep After Tax
Tax reshuffles the ranking. CountryTaxCalc’s 2026 pilot comparison models take-home pay at several salary levels. At $250,000 gross, a captain based in Texas keeps about 73 percent, or $183,200.
A captain based in New York or California keeps about 62 to 65 percent. A British Airways long-haul captain on £200,000 keeps about 59 percent. A Lufthansa captain on €230,000 keeps about 56 percent.
A UAE-based pilot pays no income tax on salary and allowances. The same source says a Lufthansa captain and an Emirates captain on equal gross pay differ by over $100,000 a year after tax. Per diem and layover pay can add $10,000 to $30,000 of effectively tax-free income in many places.
These are models, not payslips. Residency, state, allowances and deductions change the result. Ask a tax adviser before you accept a contract abroad.
Cost of Becoming a Pilot and Return on Investment
Training Costs
Training price shapes your first years. A US career-track programme usually costs $70,000 to $110,000. That covers private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and instructor ratings. Zero-to-airline programmes can reach $130,000.
ATP Flight School listed $116,995 for zero-time students in 2025. Costs differ by region. The Nigerian executive quoted $45,000 to $60,000 in South Africa, $70,000 to $110,000 in the United States, and €75,000 to €120,000 in Europe. Those prices exclude living costs, and he advised adding 10 to 20 percent.
Hour Requirements
US airlines need hours before they need talent. The FAA sets the unrestricted ATP at 1,500 hours. A restricted ATP lets graduates of approved programmes fly as first officers sooner. Embry-Riddle lists 1,000 hours for bachelor’s graduates and 1,250 hours for associate-level paths. Military pilots qualify at 750 hours.
Most pilots build hours as flight instructors. The BLS notes that instructor and charter jobs help pilots reach airline minimums. Each airline sets its own bar. Emirates wants 2,000 hours on 20-tonne jets, so check every listing before you plan.
Payback Math
Simple arithmetic shows the trade-off. A $117,000 US programme equals about 1.4 years of gross first-year regional pay at $83,000. A $45,000 to $60,000 South African programme equals one to 1.4 years of gross pay for a Kenyan first officer earning $44,000 to $48,000.
The payback period looks similar. The ceiling does not. The US ladder tops out near $419,000, while the Kenyan estimate tops out near $122,000.
These figures ignore tax, interest and the lean years as a flight instructor. Add them to your own budget.
Where Pilot Demand Is Growing
The BLS projects 7 percent job growth for airline and commercial pilots from 2025 to 2035, with about 16,400 openings a year. Leisure travel and e-commerce freight support that outlook.
Boeing’s 2026 outlook calls for 674,000 new pilots over 20 years. North America needs 122,000. Boeing’s 2025 edition counted 23,000 new pilots for Africa and 67,000 for the Middle East. Two-thirds of new personnel replace people who leave, and one-third supports fleet growth.
Demand can shift. Boeing’s 2026 report notes that disruptions this year led some carriers to adjust pilot recruitment. Delta’s pilots pushed for early talks, partly because oil prices, the economy and politics can turn fast.

How to Choose Your Route
Your best route depends on budget, passport and flight hours. Here are four routes, with the checks that matter for each.
Route 1: Train and Build Hours in the United States
Pick an FAA-approved school and price the full path to 1,500 hours or a restricted ATP. Non-US citizens need TSA approval before training. Full-time courses often need an M-1 student visa, as Flying magazine explains.
Check work authorization before you pay tuition. Airline job postings typically require legal authorization to work in the United States. Ask recruiters about sponsorship first.
Route 2: Build Jet Hours at Home, Then Apply to the Gulf
Emirates wants multi-crew jet experience and 2,000 hours. A home carrier gives you jet time and a type rating. That experience then qualifies you for Gulf recruitment drives with tax-free packages.
Route 3: Join a Sponsored Cadet Programme
Sponsored programmes cut upfront cost. SalaryTax reports that UK programmes at British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair pay a £25,000 to £30,000 stipend in return for a five-to-seven-year bond.
Singapore Airlines runs a cadet pilot programme for candidates with no flying hours. One Singapore pay guide reports early-leaver liability in the hundreds of thousands. Read the bond terms before you sign. Ask what you repay if you leave early.
Route 4: Keep Building at Home While You Plan
If cost or visas block the first three routes, a home carrier still builds type-rated hours. Pair that with a plan. Study how people land high-paying jobs and go direct to employers to find high-paying hidden jobs online.

Five Checks Before You Compare Two Pilot Offers
- Match seat and seniority. Compare first officer with first officer, and year five with year five.
- Find the paid-hour guarantee. Two offers with the same hourly rate pay differently if the monthly guarantees differ.
- Separate cash from benefits. Housing and school fees help only if you use them.
- Run the after-tax figure. Take-home share ran from 56 percent to 100 percent in the models above.
- Read the bond, repayment and contract terms. Know the cost of leaving early.

Conclusion
US pilot pay leads on ceiling. The median airline pilot salary is $232,140, and the best widebody captains earn about $419,000 in base pay. Emirates leads on tax, with cash packages that stay whole.
The UK, Germany, Canada, Singapore and Australia sit in between. Their senior captains earn $225,000 to $280,000. Tax takes a bigger share there than in the Gulf. African markets pay less, and the data is thinner.
Your next step is practical. Price your training route, count your hours, and confirm work authorization. Then compare offers after tax, not before. Delta’s contract becomes amendable at the end of 2026, so US rates may move.
