Chemistry is one of the better-paid science degrees. In the United States, chemists earned a median of $91,240 in May 2025. The median for all occupations was $50,980.

That headline hides a wide spread. A routine testing-lab analyst and a principal scientist in drug discovery share the title “chemist.” Their pay can differ by two to four times.

This guide ranks the careers in chemistry that pay well. It uses official wage data, society surveys, university graduate outcomes and employer-posted pay ranges. I cover 11 of the 20 countries in our job market and career prospects research. I flag every gap in the data.

Key Takeaways

  • U.S. chemists earned a median of $91,240 in 2025. The top 10% earned above $160,830.
  • Materials scientists earn more. Their median was $117,790, and the top 10% earned above $197,290.
  • Senior drug-discovery roles pay the most. Genentech listed a principal scientist role in medicinal chemistry at $144,000 to $269,100.
  • Employer type matters. U.S. federal chemists earned a median of $137,720. Testing-lab chemists earned $66,140.
  • A doctorate adds pay in some markets. German chemical-industry agreements set second-year minimums of €86,075 ($100,500) for PhDs and €74,050 ($86,500) for master’s graduates.
  • Location changes pay sharply. Australian chemists earned about A$114,100 ($81,200) a year. A Kenyan Chemist I advert listed KSh 594,864 to KSh 838,296 ($4,600 to $6,500).

What Makes a Chemistry Career High-Paying?

I use three tests. Pay must sit well above the national median. The employer base must be stable. A chemistry degree must open a clear route in.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) sets the baseline. Chemists earned a median of $91,240 in May 2025. The lowest 10% earned under $58,460, and the highest 10% earned above $160,830.

That chemist salary is 79% above the all-occupation median of $50,980. Materials scientists earned $117,790. Natural sciences managers earned $167,220.

Professional surveys run higher because respondents skew senior. The American Chemical Society (ACS) reported a median salary of $120,000 for members in 2024. Chemists earned $115,000 and chemical engineers earned $155,000. Most respondents hold doctorates.

Why the Same Job Title Pays So Differently

Employer type drives much of the gap. This table shows BLS median wages for U.S. chemists by industry.

Employer typeMedian chemist wage (May 2025)
Federal government$137,720
Scientific research and development services$105,930
Chemical manufacturing$88,890
State and local government$81,830
Testing laboratories$66,140

A federal chemist earns about twice what a testing-lab chemist earns. The title is the same. The work, the funding and the pay scale are not.

Chemical manufacturing employs the largest share of chemists, at 33%. Yet its median sits below the research and development median. For high-paying chemistry jobs, research-intensive employers beat volume employers.

Applied AI and Computational Chemist

This role pairs chemistry with data science. BLS describes theoretical chemists as researchers who predict the outcomes of chemical experiments. Their specialties include computational chemistry and chemical informatics, often using artificial intelligence.

Vertex listed senior principal scientist roles in applied AI for small-molecule drug discovery at $168,000 to $252,000. Candidates need chemistry depth plus coding skill. Our guide to in-demand AI skills shows what to learn first.

Principal Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry

Medicinal chemists design and refine compounds for new drugs. Senior pharma roles carry the highest base pay in chemistry. Employer-posted ranges show how far it stretches.

Genentech’s May 2026 posting for a principal scientist in medicinal chemistry listed $144,000 to $269,100 in California. Vertex advertised a senior principal research scientist in medicinal chemistry at $164,000 to $247,000. Gilead listed $195,670 to $253,220 for a principal scientist in medicinal and structural chemistry.

A comparable Roche posting asks for a Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry. It also asks for three or more years of postdoctoral or industry experience.

Process Chemist and Drug Substance Scientist

Process chemists turn a lab reaction into a safe, repeatable plant method. They work on yield, cost and purity.

Vertex listed a principal scientist role in its kilo lab at $138,000 to $207,000. The posting says the role is eligible for an annual bonus and equity awards. Total pay can therefore exceed base pay.

Natural Sciences Manager and R&D Director

Chemists who move into management earn the most in the BLS tables. The median for natural sciences managers is $167,220. That is more than three times the all-occupation median.

BLS says some chemists advance into this role. Ph.D. chemists with postdoctoral experience may lead research teams first. Greater responsibility and independence are the usual route, BLS notes.

Government Chemist

Public laboratories pay better than many graduates expect. U.S. federal chemists earned a median of $137,720. State and local government chemists earned $81,830.

Other governments publish formal pay scales. Kenya’s Public Service Commission advertised the Government Chemist post at KSh 120,270 to KSh 180,660 a month, Job Group S. That equals $929 to $1,395 a month.

Biochemist and Biophysicist

These scientists study chemical processes in living organisms. BLS reports a median of $127,410 and lists a doctoral or professional degree as typical entry education. The doctorate is the entry price, and the pay reflects it.

Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineering is the nearest high-paying neighbour. BLS puts the median at $125,040, with a bachelor’s degree as typical entry education. ACS members who are chemical engineers reported $155,000 for 2024. One route in is a chemistry degree plus graduate study in process engineering.

Materials Scientist

Materials scientists work on polymers, ceramics, metals and semiconductors. Their median wage was $117,790, and the top 10% earned above $197,290. BLS projects 8% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. The all-occupation average is 3%.

Industry changes the figure. Materials scientists in physical, engineering and life sciences research earned $132,600. Those in state colleges and universities earned $68,760. BLS ties demand to materials for electronics, energy and transportation. Our guides to semiconductor industry careers and renewable energy engineering careers show where those jobs sit.

Analytical Chemist in a Pharma Hub

Analytical chemists develop and validate test methods for drugs and materials. Pharma quality systems depend on them. Ireland shows how a pharma cluster lifts pay.

A Cork recruiter advertised an analytical development chemist at €55,000 to €65,000 ($64,200 to $75,900). Ireland’s chemicals sector grew 4.4% in 2025 to 47,771 jobs, according to the Department of Enterprise. The CSO reported median pharma and medtech earnings of €68,591 ($80,100) in 2025.

Energy and Petrochemical Chemist

Oil, gas and petrochemical employers hire chemists for process control, quality and research. Alberta is Canada’s main oil-producing province.

Job Bank lists a median of C$43.74 an hour for Alberta chemists. The Canadian median is C$38.46. Alberta pays about 14% more, or $31.70 against $27.90 an hour.

Chemistry Salaries Around the World

Each agency measures pay differently. Some publish medians. Others publish ranges or advert salaries. The table gives the best verifiable figure I found for each country.

These figures are not like-for-like. A median covers every experience level. An advert shows one role. Use the table to judge scale, not to rank countries to the dollar.

North America

The United States leads on median chemist pay among countries with occupation-level data. Its top 10% earned above $160,830. Canada’s median is about $58,000, and Job Bank’s high-end wage reached C$65.93 an hour ($47.80).

On a 2,080-hour year, that high-end wage equals about C$137,100, or $99,500. Experience, specialty and province move a chemist salary across that range.

Europe

The Royal Society of Chemistry reported a median salary of £50,000 ($68,200) for members in 2023. That was up 7.1% from 2021. Only 18% of respondents received a pay rise at or above inflation.

German chemical-industry agreements set second-year minimums of €74,050 for master’s graduates and €86,075 for doctorates. That is a 16% premium for the PhD. Many small firms are not bound by these agreements, and salaries there are generally lower.

In the German public sector, a doctorate does not move you into a higher pay group. Food chemists start at an average of €47,952 ($56,000). A Paylab survey shows 80% of Swiss chemists earning CHF 5,066 to CHF 9,944 a month, about $76,000 to $149,000 a year. It is a salary survey, not an official census.

Asia-Pacific

Jobs and Skills Australia reports a median full-time wage of A$2,194 a week for chemists and food and wine scientists. That is A$58 an hour, or about $81,200 a year. The group employs 9,100 people. Chemical and materials engineers earn more, at A$2,849 a week, or about $105,500 a year.

Nanyang Technological University’s 2025 graduate survey shows chemistry and biological chemistry graduates earning a median gross monthly salary of S$4,200. The middle half earned S$3,700 to S$4,680, or $2,900 to $3,700 a month.

Careers New Zealand lists NZ$65,000 to NZ$120,000 for chemists. Those with a PhD or more responsibility can earn NZ$150,000 ($88,500) or more. The agency notes fewer research chemist positions, because more product research happens overseas.

Africa

Kenya’s public pay scales are formal and published. A Chemist I post at the Coast Water Works Development Agency paid KSh 49,572 to KSh 69,858 a month ($383 to $540). The Government Chemist post paid KSh 120,270 to KSh 180,660. For wider comparisons, see our guide to the highest-paying professions in Kenya.

In South Africa, Payscale reports an average of R281,292 ($17,400) for analytical chemists. Mid-career analytical chemists average R409,756 ($25,400). The 10th to 90th percentile spans about R95,000 to R423,000 ($5,900 to $26,200).

The gap with Europe and North America is large. Chemists in these markets can raise earnings by targeting multinational, regulated and export-linked employers.

Which Employers Pay Chemists Best?

Scale matters. The ICIS Top 100 ranking put BASF first, with $70.0 billion in 2025 sales. Sinopec followed at $66.3 billion. ExxonMobil ($53.4 billion), PetroChina ($42.1 billion) and Dow ($40.0 billion) completed the top five.

Big sales do not guarantee big pay. Drug-discovery firms posted the highest chemist pay ranges in my data. Genentech, Vertex and Gilead listed principal-level chemistry roles starting at $138,000 or higher.

Government laboratories rank next. U.S. federal chemists earned $137,720, well above chemical manufacturing at $88,890. You can search federal openings on USAJOBS.

Pharma clusters outside the United States also pay well. Ireland hosts large pharma operations, and its sector median reached €68,591.

Industry Pressure and Where Chemistry Jobs Hold Up

Planning needs the downside too. The European chemical industry employs 1.2 million people and generated €635 billion in turnover, according to Cefic’s 2025 report. Yet plant closures grew sixfold between 2022 and 2025. OPIS reported that Cefic data link them to about 20,000 direct and 89,000 indirect job losses.

Dow announced plans in January 2026 to cut 4,500 positions. The headline on the ICIS ranking coverage cited an 82% drop in chemical profits.

Demand holds in research-heavy niches. BLS projects 7% growth for chemists and materials scientists from 2025 to 2035. That compares with 3% for all occupations. About 6,500 openings a year are projected, and many come from replacement needs.

Ireland’s pharma and medtech workforce reached 96,848 in 2025, up 60% from 2019. Pharma, specialty materials, regulated analytical testing and battery or chip materials fit this pattern. Those are the safest bets for high-paying chemistry jobs.

What Raises a Chemist’s Pay?

Degree Level

BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry requirement for chemists. Research positions often need a master’s degree or a Ph.D. Ph.D. chemists with postdoctoral experience may lead research teams.

Pay premiums vary by market. Germany’s chemical-industry doctorate minimum is 16% above the master’s minimum. ACS data show inflation-adjusted median pay in 2024 was about 6% higher than in 1985 for doctorate holders. Bachelor’s holders were about 9% higher. Master’s holders were about 1.9% lower.

Skills

BLS lists analytical, communication, interpersonal and math skills as key for chemists. The Royal Society of Chemistry found that leadership and networking top the skills members want for progression. Early-career respondents also prioritise digital skills such as AI and machine learning.

Employer and Industry

The biggest single lever is who pays you. A federal chemist earns 2.1 times a testing-lab chemist. A materials scientist in research and development earns 1.9 times one in a state university.

How to Build a High-Paying Chemistry Career

These steps turn the data into a plan.

Step 1: Pick a pay track early. Compare the roles above against your interests. Our guide to identifying your strongest career options gives a seven-step method. Shortlist two tracks, such as medicinal chemistry and materials science.

Step 2: Build lab and industry experience. BLS notes that laboratory experience from internships, fellowships and co-op programs is useful. Apply for them during your degree. Aim for R&D, pharma or materials groups.

Step 3: Choose graduate study with a target role in mind. Biochemist roles typically need a doctorate. The Roche posting above asks for a Ph.D. plus three years of experience. Process engineering needs a different route.

Step 4: Add one data or computing skill. Python, cheminformatics and statistics are common choices. The Vertex roles in applied AI for drug discovery paid $168,000 to $252,000.

Step 5: Target employer types, not job titles. Search federal laboratories, pharma R&D sites and materials research groups. Use the employer table to set your salary expectations. Employers in several U.S. states publish pay ranges, so you can benchmark offers.

Step 6: Plan your visa route before you apply. Employer-sponsored routes, such as the UK Skilled Worker visa and Singapore’s Employment Pass, need a job offer first. Points-based systems, such as Canada’s Express Entry, do not. Our ranking of the best countries to work in for English speakers compares the routes.

Step 7: Prepare to land the offer. Build an ATS-ready resume with the AscendurePro resume builder. Practise technical interviews with the interview preparation tools we reviewed. Then read our guide on how people land high-paying jobs for the offer stage.

Common Pay Traps and How to Avoid Them

Academia pays less than industry. Materials scientists in state universities earned $68,760, against $132,600 in research and development firms. BLS lists postsecondary teachers at $85,330 as a group.

Testing-lab work sits at the bottom of the chemist range. Chemists there earned $66,140, and chemical technicians earned $60,390. Treat testing roles as an entry step if you plan to move into regulated R&D.

Advert salaries are not offers. Posted ranges show base pay. Bonuses and equity sit on top, as Vertex’s kilo lab posting shows.

Inflation also erodes pay. Only 18% of Royal Society of Chemistry respondents received a rise at or above inflation in the year before the 2023 survey.

How I Gathered and Converted the Data

I pulled wage data from national statistics agencies, professional societies, university graduate surveys and employer postings. I used the newest figure available for each source. Medians are labelled as medians, and ranges as ranges.

I converted local currencies to U.S. dollars using the Kenya Revenue Authority’s published rates for 24 to 30 August 2026, rounded. New Zealand figures use about $0.59 per NZ dollar. For a similar cross-country pay comparison, see our commercial pilot salary analysis.

Conclusion

Careers in chemistry that pay well share three traits. They sit in research-intensive or regulated employers. They reward advanced training or a scarce technical skill. They connect to products with strong demand, such as drugs, batteries and chips.

The data are clear on the spread. A U.S. chemist earns a median of $91,240, yet drug-discovery principals can reach $269,100. A testing-lab chemist earns $66,140. Employer and specialty decide where you land.
